On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown Jr. was shot and killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
Brown’s body lay in the street for hours before protests erupted in the northern St. Louis County town and across the country. The moment became a flashpoint, sparking renewed calls for justice against police brutality and an emphasis on support for the black community.
Michael Brown Sr. and his wife, Cal Brown, founded Choosing Change to turn their pain into purpose.
The nonprofit runs numerous community programs to support families who have lost a child.
Brown Jr.’s mother, Lezley McSpadden, also founded the Michael O.D. Brown We Love Our Sons and Daughters Foundation after her son’s death.
Brown Sr. led a miles-long solidarity march Friday from Normandy High School, where Brown Jr. graduated eight days before he was killed, to Canfield Avenue, the site of his son’s death.
“I will never let the world forget my son,” he told St. Louis Public Radio on Friday. “We wanted to show what he was doing before the hashtag.”
