Ireland’s Kelly Harrington won gold in the women’s 60kg category at the Paris Olympics, but Team GB boxer Lewis Richardson missed out after losing to Mexico’s Marco Vader in the men’s 71kg final.
Harrington defeated Yang Wenlu in the women’s 60kg final at Roland Garros to win the double Olympic title.
After a cautious start, Young started landing more punches and looked to be in control, but Harrington regained his composure and landed a series of body shots before the bell.
The Chinese fighter came out of the blocks in the second round with a punch to the nose, but Harrington continued to do damage with some hard shots to the body.
The Irish boxer landed a quick punch in the final round to win Ireland its fourth gold medal of the Games.
Earlier in the night, Richardson was forced to settle for the bronze medal after being defeated by Vader via split decision.
The Briton started with a punch to Vader’s face, but the Mexican got back into the round, throwing a series of different combinations and breaking through the British fighter’s defense.
The Colchester boxer showed off his skills in the second round, landing a nice uppercut and landing several hard blows to Vader’s head to win the round .
A close fight went into the third round, and Richardson began to use his wingspan more, landing punches to Vader’s nose.
The Mexican hit the British boxer on the cheek, but he managed a few hard swings before being hit again in the face by Richardson.
However, five judges saw it differently and awarded the Mexican a round, meaning Richardson’s dream of reaching the Olympic final was over.
The bronze medal means Richardson is the only British boxer to medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Already guaranteed a bronze medal after defeating Zeiyad Eshashe in Saturday’s quarter-finals, he reflected on a bittersweet feeling after missing out on a chance at gold.
“It’s very primitive and very difficult to process now,” he said.
“I won the bronze medal but it’s hard to celebrate completely because you’re going to the next bronze medal and want to change the color of the medal.
“I’m sure that when the time comes, I’ll make a conscious effort — hopefully sooner rather than later — to flip the switch and be proud of what I’ve accomplished.
“Because rightly or wrongly I’m the only British boxer to win a medal at these Olympics and I hope I’ve made this country proud.”
Later this week, Vader will compete for gold against Uzbek Asadhuja Mudinhujaev.
