According to the latest notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, nearly 30 beverages have been recalled so far this year.
Four Charles Boggini Co. drinks sold at restaurants in the latest recall contain potentially harmful chemicals, according to an FDA enforcement notice recently analyzed by USA TODAY.
The company’s Pink Lemonade, Coke Flavor Base, Yellow Lemonade and Yellow Lemonade X are all recalled.
Pink lemonade drinks contain FD&C Red No. 40 dye, which has been linked to colorectal cancer. Yellow Lemonade and Yellow Lemonade X contain FD&C Yellow No. 5, which may cause allergic reactions in some people.
At the same time, cola flavoring base contains sulfites, which can cause respiratory diseases when consumed in large doses.
According to WMAO-TV, approximately 1.9 million bottles of Fiji water have been recalled. The water is suspected of containing manganese and what the FDA calls three “bacterial genera.”
The USB code for the affected bottles is: 6 32565 00001 2.
“The FDA classification announced yesterday relates to events that occurred several months ago and never posed any health or safety risk,” said company representative Melissa England.
When summarizing the recall, the British “Daily Mail” pointed out that Tapee Tea was recalled because it contained anti-inflammatory drugs that were never listed or declared on the label; Pepsi-Cola learned that Yee Foun Zero Sugar Ginger Ale Recalled after actually containing sugar; 2,000 cases of Mug Root Beer recalled for containing Mug Zero Sugar Root Beer.
Nearly 25,000 cases of Martinelli’s apple juice have been recalled due to excessive levels of inorganic arsenic.
The Post also noted that of the 28 recalls, 24 were due to products containing undeclared substances (including hazardous chemicals).
AL.com notes that more than 900 cases of Powerade are being recalled.
These include 87 cases of Powerade Zero Mixed Berry (lot codes 0013098209, 0013111742, 0013111657 and 0013119902); 366 cases of Powerade Mountain Berry Blast (lot codes 0013098209, 0013111742, 0013111657 and 0013119902) and 14 9 boxes of Powerade Zero Fruit Punch Lot code 00130982091,07319196 902.
The drink was recalled due to concerns it may contain metallic foreign matter.
“A lot of beverages have come under scrutiny recently, and a lot of it has to do with labeling and undeclared ingredients,” said Dr. Darin Detwiler, a food safety expert at Northeastern University in Boston, according to the Daily Mail.
According to FDA regulations, various infant formulas have also been recalled.
More than 1 million cans of Enfamil Nutramigen hypoallergenic infant formula are being recalled because they may contain Cronobacter sakazakii. The bacteria can cause seizures or brain swelling in babies.
Sammy’s Milk’s No. 2 goat’s milk toddler formula has been recalled due to misleading claims.
The FDA maintains a page that consumers can use to search for products and call them.
