Survival food isn’t getting cheaper
Freeze-drying food is time-consuming and expensive. For example, beef must be cooked, frozen, and then freeze-dried for more than 24 hours to retain flavor and nutritional qualities. Unlike dehydrated beef or jerky, freeze-dried beef does not suffer a significant loss in quality.
Food prices are rising across the board. This is especially true in the subsistence food industry, where food must be freeze-dried from a fresh state before it can be packaged and sold. The biggest challenge faced by many surviving businesses is the limited production scale of freeze drying. The process cannot be sped up and hiring more people when demand is so high is ineffective unless there is an open freeze dryer. In other words, production was forced to remain stable even as so many people began to buy survival food as they do today.
Quality is important
There is a common theme among many new doomsday preppers. Podcaster Joe Rogan said it best when he pointed out a few years ago that he had stocked up on buckets of beans and rice and would be happier with that than anything else if necessary.
Seasoned doomsday preppers, especially those who have long subsisted on low-quality food, know there is a huge difference between good and bad survival food. The psychological effects of repeated consumption of poor-quality food often occur much faster than people expect. Then there are the health issues; protein in particular needs to be kept at its best during ongoing “survival mode,” as low-quality meat or meat substitutes can lead to a host of medical problems.

No matter what events or events prompt a person’s need to eat survival food, it is likely that over a long period of time people will choose to eat less food because they will not have the appetite to eat the food necessary to maintain their strength.
