Four men from the Dominican Republic have been indicted in Puerto Rico on wildlife trafficking charges involving more than 100 dead birds, officials said Monday.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the U.S. Coast Guard spotted the men on an unflag boat in northern Puerto Rico earlier this month and saw them throwing wooden cages containing tropical birds onto the boat as authorities approached .
Some 113 birds were recovered from the ocean, officials said, adding that the men traveled to U.S. soil to smuggle the exotic birds back to neighboring Dominican Republic.

The suspect appeared in court Monday. A judge ordered three of them jailed and the fourth placed under house arrest pending an upcoming trial.
