Forty former Justice Department officials from both parties have signed a letter endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris’ bid for president.
The following is the full text of the letter:
This election is about the fabric of the country, the rule of law and the future of democracy. For nearly four years, Joe Biden has been fighting to restore America. He has guided us out of a devastating global pandemic, created millions of jobs, expanded opportunity for all Americans, and rebuilt global alliances to make our country safer. We are grateful for his years of extraordinary service and his historic decision to put country first and pass the torch to the next generation of leaders. We join him in enthusiastically supporting Vice President Kamala Harris to become the next President of the United States.
Vice President Harris is the best choice to defeat Donald Trump and lead the country. She has been a key partner in President Biden’s effort to rebuild America and its place in the world. She has been a tireless advocate for American workers, reproductive freedom, and the rule of law. As President of the Senate, she cast a record number of tie-breaking votes to stop the Republican right from impeding our country’s progress.
As California’s elected attorney general, she oversees the nation’s largest state judicial department. She has built strong relationships with law enforcement to keep people safe, fight for American consumers, and combat those who prey on the American people. She won $20 billion in settlements for Californians whose homes were foreclosed and $1.1 billion in settlements for students and veterans who were taken advantage of by for-profit education companies. She also defended the Affordable Care Act in court and enforced environmental laws.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. Former President Trump posed serious risks to our country, our global alliances, and the future of democracy. As president, he often ignored the rule of law. One of his first actions was to order an unconstitutional Muslim travel ban. His last act was to try to stay in power by defying the results of the election and the will of the American people. Along the way, he appointed deeply conservative Supreme Court justices who overturned longstanding precedents and legal protections: stripping women of their reproductive rights, undermining environmental protections, and granting Trump virtual immunity from his “official actions.”
We have all had the privilege of serving as U.S. Attorneys, in other leadership positions in the U.S. Department of Justice, and as civic leaders. We love our country and believe in its endless possibilities. But it takes work. We urge all Americans to join us in supporting Vice President Harris for President of the United States.
Some of the nation’s most respected federal law enforcement officials, including former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, signed the letter. Former Justice Department officials from both parties have warned the nation that Trump poses a threat to American justice and the rule of law.
The best way to protect freedoms and ensure that the Department of Justice does not become a political weapon and arm of Donald Trump is to vote for Kamala Harris and ensure that she becomes the next President of the United States.
