The world needs a savior. While scientists disagree on how devastating the consequences of climate change will be, there is no doubt that industrialization has pushed the planet to dangerous tipping points.
Despite controversy, criticism and outright scorn from doubters, the people who have worked hard over the years to protect Mother Earth deserve praise. While words are not enough to express “thank you” for humanity’s only habitat, the world should know the names of these five ecological guardians who are working behind the scenes to save the planet.
1. Rainforest Alliance
Did you know that frogs are important biological indicators? They show the health of an ecosystem over time. That’s why the Rainforest Alliance chose one as their mascot 35 years ago. The organization is a leader in protecting the Amazon rainforest, one of the world’s largest carbon removers.
The organization takes a multifaceted approach to its work. Their Rainforest Alliance Certification program shows that the product protects forests, climate, human rights and livelihoods. They also work directly in at-risk areas to slow deforestation and support biodiversity. For example, they recently worked with farmers in the buffer zone of one of Indonesia’s national parks to create a wildlife corridor to support endangered elephants.
2. Advanced Energy Associates
Companies often get a bad rap for damaging the environment. While industrialization has undoubtedly contributed to the current crisis, many people have used their wealth and success to do good within the system. Advanced Energy Associates is one such example. This is an association of businesses whose mission is to achieve 100% clean energy in the United States.
Their initiative is important. Because of their personal success, they are able to work with key decision-makers at all levels of government to advocate for policies that accelerate the energy transition.
While homeowners can convert their properties to renewable energy, it will take a combined effort from business and government to regulate utilities like electric companies. The transition to a 100% clean grid will significantly reduce fossil fuel demand, as factories and residential complexes that currently burn coal and oil will soon get their electricity from solar as well as complementary energy sources such as wind and geothermal energy.
3. Electrification Alliance
Converting homes, factories and brands to green energy will significantly reduce fossil fuel emissions, but what about all those cars and trucks? This is where the Electrification Alliance comes in. They work to catalyze the transition to an all-electric fleet through participation in programs such as the Climate Mayors Electric Vehicle Purchasing Partnership, the Electric Freight Alliance, the State EV Policy Accelerator and the American Cities Climate Challenge.
Their efforts are making a difference. Experts expect sales of electric vehicles to double by 2027, and new top-down guidance from the EPA could further encourage expansion. The work extends well beyond passenger cars and trucks, including retrofitting semi-trailers, buses and garbage trucks as part of the transition. If in the future you can jog through a city block without breathing in exhaust fumes, you’ll probably have these people to thank, at least in part.
4. Forest Stewardship Council
Nearly half of the world’s forests have already been lost, and the Forest Stewardship Council aims to prevent this number from falling further. Trees are humanity’s best defense against atmospheric carbon, acting like giant brushes that clear away pollutants. FSC currently protects 12 percent, or more than 500 million acres, of remaining forests. Their work has had an impact, with deforestation rates slowing by 40% since 1990.
Forests provide more than just clean air and recreational space. They are home to countless plant and animal species, some of which may benefit humans but remain undiscovered. Buying products with its label means the product does not cause a net loss of forests, while protecting fair wages and community rights.
5. The Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy is one of the oldest environmental action organizations, founded more than a century ago in 1915. Take proactive action to protect the environment. Today, they work on a much wider scale, assisting conservation efforts around the world.
For example, in 2012 they worked with The Dow Chemical Company to develop a model for valuing nature in business decisions. They recently developed a climate change strategy that covers all 50 states, while their Canadian partners preserve 19 million acres of the Pacific coast between Vancouver Island and southeast Alaska. Other projects include converting an abandoned mining town into a state park while protecting the area from chemical spills.
Eco-Guardians Saving the Earth
The planet needs as many heroes as possible. Fortunately, organizations like the ones mentioned above have stepped up to assist with conservation efforts. Supporting their mission and praising their work is just a way of saying thank you for protecting humanity’s only habitat.
