ProPublica reports:
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas acknowledged for the first time in a new financial disclosure document that he should have publicly reported two free vacations he received from billionaire Harlan Crow.
ProPublica first revealed two trips in 2019, one to Indonesia and the other to Bohemian Grove, an all-male resort in northern California.
There are more issues involving Thomas than just two trips. Supreme Court justices have reportedly been accepting bribes from wealthy donors for 20 years. The gifts ranged from real estate deals to private school tuition to even luxury motorhomes.
Thomas acknowledged that he should have disclosed the trips, another effort by judges to mitigate a corruption scandal that has grown over time. Judge Thomas believed he could defuse the scandal by admitting he should disclose a small part of what he had accepted.
Democrats are investigating Thomas’ right-wing friends in the Senate, and House Democrats have introduced oversight and investigation legislation.
Storm clouds are growing for the conservative court majority. If Democrats succeed in the November election, they will seek to impose ethics and investigative rules and reforms on a seemingly lawless Supreme Court majority.
