The Brazilian government said it would seek the extradition of more than 60 people who fled to Argentina on suspicion of involvement in the riots that rocked the Brazilian capital last year.
The riots were led by supporters of former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro about a week after Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took office.
On January 8, 2023, thousands of people managed to make their way across the city with little challenge before storming the government buildings in BrasÃlia.
Hundreds of Bolsonaro supporters have been arrested, charged and released on bail.
Since right-wing President Javier Milley took office in December, many of them have fled to Argentina, seeking political asylum there.
Now the Brazilian government is seeking their return.
“We will list all the convicted persons who may be in Argentina and file an extradition request,” federal police chief Andre Passos told local media.
It was unclear whether Mr Milley, a friend of Mr Bolsonaro and a staunch critic of President Lula, would accept the request.
Several police officers were injured in the violence, and the presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court were damaged after rioters forced their way in.
The Brazilian government believes the unrest is part of a coup orchestrated by Bolsonaro, who refuses to accept his defeat in a hotly contested presidential election. He denied any involvement.
President Lula was also very firm in his accusation of collusion “within the armed forces”.
