In my post yesterday about the 2020 presidential election, I argued that the widespread use of mail voting due to the coronavirus pandemic skewed the election results. This is done because when people vote at home rather than at polling stations with curtains drawn, family members and party lobbyists watch how those people vote. Voters inevitably feel pressure from family members and lobbyists that they do not feel when voting at traditional polling stations.
The second problem with mail-in voting is that headlines and news are constantly changing. The goal of elections should be to capture voter sentiment on election day, not election month. All voters should take into consideration the common conditions of the nation and the world when casting their votes.
I do not believe there was fraudulent vote counting or voting machine errors in the 2020 presidential election. Therefore, I did make the mistake of writing that the 2020 mail-in voting results were fraudulent. However, I do think the outcome of the 2020 election was changed by the use of mail in voting, which may explain why President Trump lost the counted votes in 2020. The voters may have felt pressure not to vote for President Trump’s re-election.
Looking ahead, President Trump today called on Republicans to make significant investments in mail-in voting, which is entirely sensible if Democrats are going to participate. A better long-term outcome would be to go back to secret ballots and let everyone vote in person on a certain day — Election Day.
