“She was a child, and part of our concern was we wanted our children to know God,” he said. “This is not a fear-based thing, nor is it demanding or forcing them. We want to show the love of Christ to our children so strongly that they, imperfectly, see God’s love reflected in us and want more, and I want to pursue him.”

Witnessing Lucy’s childlike faith was “one of the most beautiful gifts,” Morgan said.

Morgan, pastor of Green Pond Bible Church in Rockaway, New Jersey, prioritizes sharing the gospel of salvation with his four children.
“We explain the gospel to our children every day,” Morgan said. “This is not a one-time incident.”
“We view this as an ongoing conversation with the kids, always, but concerns remain,” he said. “Did I say the right thing? Did I do the right thing?”
Morgan shared that he and his wife struggled to figure out whether they had spoken the gospel clearly to their 6-year-old daughter before her death.
Morgan said he asked himself: “Am I good enough as a father, as a mother, to be able to express clearly that Jesus died for you and loves you, that we need His love, that we need His death and resurrection.”

Lucy’s father said he turned to his blog, New Creation Life, to “simply ask for help.”
“The first post was just a plea for help to people who I knew would be praying for us, and it was a way for me to unpack the trauma in my body,” he said. “I continue to find this to be a beneficial process for my grief, confusion, and anger.”
“I think God was happy to use it, and it was overwhelming,” he said. “But I still continue to try to be myself and be true to myself.”
Morgan said people have been telling him they were surprised by the family’s faith during his young daughter’s heartbreaking death, but he explained it’s not that simple.
“We don’t want to persevere. There’s a big part of us that wants to be cut off from God,” he said. “And we simply can’t. It’s just not going to happen.”

Morgan said he believes God arranged circumstances in his family’s lives to prepare them for Lucy’s death.
“I feel like God puts all these things into our lives to prepare us for this,” he said. “I don’t even know what that means in God’s plan, and I don’t want to try to do the divine math and figure it out and explain it.”

Morgan said two days before Lucy’s unexpected death, the family sang “He’ll Hold on to Me” by Christian singers Keith and Kristen Getty and Sierra.
