French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday he would dissolve the National Assembly and called for early legislative elections after his party suffered a crushing defeat in European Parliament elections.

“I have decided to return to you, through a vote, the choice of the future of our parliament,” Macron said in an address to the nation from the Elysee Palace presidential palace. “I will therefore dissolve the National Assembly.” He said the vote would take place on June 30 and It will be held in two rounds on July 7.
