Electric car starts Fisker The company announced on Wednesday that it will recall thousands of Ocean SUVs in North America and Europe due to vehicle software issues and failure to meet safety standards.
The company recalled 11,201 Oceans in the United States, Canada and Europe due to safety concerns. The company said in a news release that affected vehicles have an issue with their motor control units and vehicle control unit software, which could cause the vehicles to lose motor power.
Fisker is also recalling 6,864 Oceans in the United States and 281 in Canada for compliance reasons. The company said the vehicles currently do not meet federal vehicle safety standards related to instrument displays and instrument graphics.
The company said it plans to address all of these issues through an over-the-air update process. Fisker said that vehicles updated to OS 2.1 are not affected by this recall, and the software update process is expected to be completed by June 30, 2024.
The recall comes after months of frustration for Fisker. CNBC reported in February that the company may not be able to continue as a going concern due to slowing demand due to high interest rates.
Fisker’s woes continued into March, when talks about a potential deal with an unnamed major automaker collapsed and the New York Stock Exchange announced plans to delist the startup’s shares due to “unusually low” stock levels.
In April, Reuters reported that U.S. auto safety regulators launched an investigation into the 2023 Ocean due to complaints that the vehicle’s doors would not open. This marks the third investigation into Fisker by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – with more investigations underway due to braking and unintended vehicle movement issues in the 2023 Ocean.
When Fisker announced its latest full-year financial results in February, it said the company delivered 4,929 oceans in 2023. The company said it expects to deliver 20,000-22,000 vehicles in 2024.
The company said it notified dealers of the recall on May 30 and will notify owners by June 30.
