Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton wants to mandate minimum prison sentences for people who vandalize and deface statues on federal property.
On Thursday, the senator introduced the Saving Precious Antiquities Through Unified Enforcement (STATUE) Act, which would do just that.

If passed, the bill would prohibit anyone from intentionally injuring or damaging, or attempting to “injure or damage, a structure, plaque, statue or other monument on public property.” Anyone guilty of such conduct shall be fined at least $1,000 and sentenced to imprisonment for at least 5 years but not more than 10 years.
Cotton’s bill comes after recent rallies outside the White House in the U.S. capital, which included pro-Hamas demonstrators defacing a statue. In Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C., protesters vandalized statues while protesting the Biden administration’s policies toward Israel and the Gaza war.

An equestrian statue of former President Andrew Jackson and a statue of Count Rochambeau, a French army commander who helped the United States repel the British in the Revolutionary War, were destroyed.
Scrawled on the statue are the words “Free Gaza” and “Free Palestine,” as well as “Death to America,” and there are even statements in support of the terrorist organization Hamas, such as “Long live Hamas” and “Muslim Four Ha” Mas”.
