If passed, the bill would prohibit anyone from intentionally injuring or damaging, or attempting to “injure or damage, a structure, plaque, statue or other monument on public property.” Anyone guilty of such conduct shall be fined at least $1,000 and sentenced to imprisonment for at least 5 years but not more than 10 years.
Cotton’s bill comes after recent rallies outside the White House in the U.S. capital, which included pro-Hamas demonstrators defacing a statue. In Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C., protesters vandalized statues while protesting the Biden administration’s policies toward Israel and the Gaza war.

An equestrian statue of former President Andrew Jackson and a statue of Count Rochambeau, a French army commander who helped the United States repel the British in the Revolutionary War, were destroyed.
