Cameco (NYSE: CCJ), Westinghouse Electric Co. and Saskatchewan Power Co. said Monday they signed a memorandum of understanding to evaluate the use of Westinghouse Electric Co.’s nuclear reactor technology as a clean energy source for Saskatchewan.
The companies said the MoU will explore technical and commercial avenues Deploy Westinghouse’s reactor technology, including the advanced AP1000 reactor and AP300 small modular reactor, for long-term power supply planning.
Saskatchewan Power said it expects to make a final investment decision in 2029 on whether to proceed with construction of the province’s first SMR facility.
The AP1000 reactor has been put into operation in the United States and China. Westinghouse Electric stated that the reactor has set records in operational performance and stability in both countries and has been selected for nuclear energy projects in Poland, Ukraine and Bulgaria, and Nuclear energy projects are being considered in several countries, including India and India.
