Tustin police are investigating an alleged robbery involving a U.S. Secret Service member whose property was taken at gunpoint.
At 9:36 pm on Saturday, police were called to reports of a possible robbery at the Tustin Field 1 housing complex in Tustin Legacy, a former military base that has been converted into a housing development.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim, a member of the U.S. Secret Service, had his bag stolen at gunpoint, according to the police report. During the incident, shots were fired between the alleged robber and the agents, officials said.
It’s unclear how many suspects were involved in the incident and what led up to the shooting.
The incident occurred on the same night that President Biden and former President Obama attended a fundraiser for President Biden’s re-election campaign at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
The Tustin Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It was not clear from the department’s press statement whether the agents who were robbed were in Los Angeles protecting Biden or Obama.
The suspect has not been identified or located, officials said.
Tustin police are looking for a 2004-06 silver Infiniti FX35 or a similar vehicle that was found leaving the scene.
It was unclear whether the suspect was injured as a result of the incident.
Police found some of the victim’s belongings in the area, but did not disclose the contents.
The incident remains under investigation. Officials are asking for the public’s help in identifying the person suspected of the robbery. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Graciela Melendrez at (714) 573-3372 or gmelendrez@tustinca.org.
