The short was less than five minutes long, but it was long enough for the Uruguayan filmmaker to get the attention of Hollywood — and the rest is history. (You can still watch the original here.) Going from making your own calling card sci-fi story (Alvarez directed, edited and did the visual effects; he also had a hand in designing the robots) to 11 years later making a new sci-fi story, not bad. evil Dead film, and 15 years later he directed a new alien Franchise.
