OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever is launching a new artificial intelligence company focused on security. In a post on Wednesday, Sutskever revealed Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), a startup with “one goal and one product”: to create a safe and powerful artificial intelligence system.
The announcement describes SSI as a startup that “cares about both security and functionality,” allowing the company to rapidly advance its artificial intelligence systems while still prioritizing security. It also pointed to the external pressures that artificial intelligence teams at companies like OpenAI, Google and Microsoft often face, and said the company’s “single focus” allows it to avoid “overhead expenses or product cycle disruptions.”
“Our business model means safety, security and progress are independent of short-term commercial pressures,” the announcement reads. “This way we can scale with peace of mind.” In addition to Sutskever, SSI’s co-founders There is Daniel Gross, former head of artificial intelligence at Apple, and Daniel Levy, a technical staff member at OpenAI.
With OpenAI moving forward with partnerships with Apple and Microsoft, we probably won’t see SSI doing the same anytime soon. during an interview BloombergSutskever said SSI’s first product will be a secure superintelligence, and the company “won’t do anything else” until then.
