Vice President Kamala Harris reacted to a Supreme Court ruling that could ban domestic abusers from owning guns, slamming Donald Trump.
Vice President Harris said:
The ruling preserves important domestic violence protections, but the fight to protect common-sense gun safety measures is not over. President Biden and I passed the most important gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years, and our administration has halted the sale of nearly 30,000 guns to convicted domestic abusers because we know that preventing abusers from obtaining guns saves lives. All of this progress will be at risk if Donald Trump returns to power.
While President Biden and I stood up against the gun lobby, Donald Trump caved. Trump has made clear that he believes Americans should “get over” gun violence, and we cannot allow him to roll back common sense protections or appoint the next generation of Supreme Court justices. I have dedicated my entire career to protecting women and children from domestic violence – from prosecuting abusers to supporting survivors. President Biden and I will never stop fighting for the rights of every American, including every survivor of domestic violence, to be free from the horrors of gun violence. To continue this work, we must defeat Donald Trump in November.
This case is yet another reminder that some want to return our country to a time when women were not treated equally as men and were not allowed to vote—and where husbands could commit physical violence against their wives without it being considered a crime. Trump is a threat to our freedoms and security, and we must defeat him in November.
Trump has always put America last, bowing to every despicable special interest that can bring him a dollar. The former president has promised the NRA that he will allow them to do whatever they want. Trump has offered to sell U.S. energy policy to the fossil fuel industry.
The Supreme Court made the obvious decision today, but because of Trump, this court has expanded the scope of the Second Amendment and put more American lives at risk.
Freedom is on the ballot, and that includes the freedom to not get shot while you’re at work, school, church, buying groceries or trying to enjoy a night out.
If Trump returns to the White House, the freedom to live safely will be at risk.
