“Elden Ring” DLC “Shadow of the Erdtree” has been released to the public. For $40, players will have access to a whole new area with more weapons, bosses, and secrets to discover. But once you’re in the game, getting into the DLC is a bit more complicated, so here’s how to get started with Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
First, you need to purchase Shadow of the Erdtree for your platform (PC, XBox Series X/S, PS5) and install it. But you can’t access the DLC through the main menu – instead, you need to reach a specific area and defeat two optional bosses to gain access to the DLC.
We’ll explain it in detail below, but the TL;DR for accessing the DLC is: Defeat Radharn the Starscourge and Mog the Bloodlord, then in the Mogwen Palace Arena where you defeated the latter, touch the Blight hanging outside arm. Boom, you’ve entered the DLC.
But before you dive into Shadow of the Erdtree, make sure you’re prepared. Early reviews of the DLC have noted that it’s even harder than the base game – which is great for players craving a challenge, but you’ll need to be prepared.
First, FromSoftware recommends that players get their characters to level 120-150 before trying the DLC. During the preview, we were given a pre-made level 150 character and fully upgraded weapons, but we still faced challenges.

Speaking of weapon upgrades, before you delve into exploring the Shadowlands in the DLC, you’ll want to upgrade your best weapons to the highest level possible. To do this, you’ll need regular and shady forged stones – make sure to get or buy enough of them by fixing all miner bell bearings so that you can buy wrought and shady stones around Elden Ring. It’s a good idea to stock up on forge stones, as you’ll want to upgrade some of the over 100 new weapons in the DLC.
If you’ve put down Elden Ring for a while, you might want to reacquaint yourself with the game’s combat, weapons, items, amulets, armor, and buildings. Assuming you’re all set, here’s how to get the DLC.

How to access the Elden Ring DLC
As mentioned above, you can’t access the DLC just from the menu – you need to find it in the game. Before that, you need to defeat two bosses: Starscourge Radarn and Blood Lord Mog.
Starscourge Radarn can be found in the early-game Kelid region, just east of Ringgrave’s starting area. You’ll need to head to the southeastern edge of Kelid and pass through Redmane Castle. According to Fextralife, you’ll need to activate any of the Altean Plateau’s Grace Sites, or progress Ranni’s questline far enough to chat with the relevant non-player characters, to ensure the castle hosts a Radahn festival that invites warriors to challenge Radahn – included You lose your luster. Go past the gathered NPCs and talk to Jaron, then walk up to the church and take the elevator to the portal.

Bloodlord Mog is harder to find and is located further into the game. The easiest way to reach the palace of Mohgwyn, where Mohg resides, is to follow the side quests of the NPC Varre the White Mask, which involves participating in player-versus-player combat and invading other players’ games or defeating NPCs. Completing the quest will give you an item, the Medal of Pureblood Knights, which you can use to travel to the Mogwen Palace.
If you don’t like PvP, another way to get to Mogwen Palace is through the portal in the Consecrated Snowfield area, which itself is after you find the two halves of the Secret Medal of Haligtri and present it in the Great Hall. It’s deep inside the game. The teleporter to Mogwen’s Palace is located to the west of the Holy Snowfield area. Look around for the small rune bears, and once you reach the area invaded by the Blood Noble NPCs, go west from there.
Once you reach Mogwen’s palace, you’ll need to make your way around the swamp, dodge some nasty summoned giant skeletons, and climb up to the tomb. You have to defeat or rush through a horde of slow zombies who die from blood explosions, then progress through dark tunnels where more nasty blood-red noble enemies appear. Finally, you’ll reach an elevator that will take you to Mog’s boss arena. Defeat him and use the drooping arm to approach the cocoon, which is the body of Miquela, the body of Miquela who left behind when traveling to the Shadowlands. Touch the arm and you can enter the DLC.
