“Pirates of the Caribbean” actor Tamayo Perry died after being attacked by a shark while surfing in Hawaii.
The 49-year-old man died Sunday afternoon at Honolulu Emergency Services confirmed at a press conference.
Emergency services were called to Malaekahana Beach around 13:00 local time.
But Perry, who worked as a lifeguard, was pronounced dead by paramedics after being brought to shore by motorboat.
Perry played a pirate in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the fourth film in the franchise.
The 2011 film stars Johnny Depp as the eccentric pirate Captain Jack Sparrow and also stars Penelope Cruz and Geoffrey Rush.
Perry has also had roles in “Lost,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “Blue Crush” and the “Charlie’s Angels” sequel “Full Throttle,” as well as appearing in Coca-Cola commercials.
Perry, who was born on the east side of Oahu, has been surfing professionally for more than a decade.

“This little island boy can compete with the best in the world,” he wrote.
He also said that a few years ago, he was involved in “a bizarre accident that almost resulted in a fatal experience.”
Perry did not elaborate on what the incident involved, but said it happened due to a “lack of awareness” on the part of others.
Kurt Lager, acting director of the Honolulu Marine Safety Authority, said Perry was “a lifeguard who was loved by all,” adding that he was well-known on Oahu’s North Shore and around the world.
“Tamayo’s personality was infectious and people loved him, but he loved other people more.”
“Our condolences go out to Tamayo’s family,” he added.
Mayor Rick Blangiardi echoed Large’s sentiments and said Perry’s death was a “tragic loss.”
He told a press conference: “Tamayo was a legendary sailor and highly respected. [he] Grew up here and is a great member of our Ocean Safety team.
He said receiving such a call on Sunday afternoon was “hard to imagine” and called on Perry’s family to not have private space to grieve.
