We analyze each service’s overall menu and seafood selections, although more choices aren’t always better. Quality is more important than quantity, especially considering that some services specialize in specific varieties, such as salmon, sushi-grade fish, or fresh lobster. We noticed how easy the seafood selection was to navigate and how simple the ordering process was. We also consider the level of transparency in fish and seafood, including transparency related to sustainability. Some services provide detailed tracking of their products, while others provide sparse information about the origin of fish and seafood.
Testing seafood delivery services is largely anecdotal, but we’ve ordered at least one batch of fish from every service on this list, usually two or three. Our primary concern is freshness, so we carefully smell, cook and taste every piece of fish that comes every time we serve it. If there is any sub-par seafood, we will note it. We’ll also look for any signs of inadequate packaging.
Premature thawing, ice melt and cross-contamination are big issues in seafood shipping, so we look for well-sealed fish that is completely frozen on arrival. If fresh seafood is being shipped, we will ensure that the ice packs or freezer bags have not melted or been damaged and that the fish is still cold to the touch.
