Congress and Democratic leaders have no plans to force President Biden to withdraw from the presidential race.
CNN’s Manu Raju reports:
Democratic leaders are not planning to directly intervene to force Joe Biden out of the race after his performance at last night’s debate was widely criticized, according to multiple Democratic sources.
Democrats hope to let the dust settle and assess the strength of Biden’s campaign.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries told reporters today that Biden should not withdraw.
Asked for his reaction to Biden’s performance, Jeffries said: “We’re going to win the House in November.”
The Biden campaign and the president need to acknowledge his poor performance and develop a strategy to change course and move forward. Biden could easily make voters forget about the debates that took place months before Election Day.
The president and his campaign cannot assume voters will forget his poor debates by Election Day. Biden’s answer is great. There is an intellectual battle between him and Trump.
Donald Trump did not emerge victorious from this debate. While polls show voters think Trump is doing a better job, most people also don’t trust Trump to lead the country, and the former president bombarded the debate with swing state voters.
The door is open for Biden. Democrats would be fooled if they oust Biden and plunge themselves into chaos. Republicans have been dreaming of turning the 2024 election into a repeat of 1968 when Nixon returned to power, thanks in large part to the Democratic disarray after Lyndon Johnson decided not to run for reelection. Just because the Democratic National Convention will be held in Chicago in 2024, the party should learn from the mistakes of 1968.
Biden and his campaign need to address this issue, but don’t expect top Democrats to try to push the president to retire.
