A man who escaped from a California prison camp in 2011 has been captured in New York City, officials announced Friday.
Eduardo Hernandez, 42, was arrested without incident on May 20 and will soon be extradited back to California, where he could face charges for his escape in Solano County, authorities said .
In 2011, Hernandez was sentenced to 13 years in prison for carjacking, six years after he stole from the minimum-security Camp Delta in the city of Suisun. Padilla) escape together.
The two men were last seen around 4:30 a.m. on November 15. Their escape was heavily covered by the media.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation asked reporters to ask the New York Police Department for details about how Hernandez was arrested. NYPD officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
California prison officials say that since 1977, 99 percent of “people who leave adult institutions, camps or community programs without permission” have been caught.
Padilla was not among them. Officials said Saturday that he “has not yet been arrested.”
