E-International Relations is looking for students at any level to join us as Editorial Assistants for the 2024 Summer Internship (Voluntary, Remote). A key part of the role is working directly with E-IR’s Editor-in-Chief and Publisher, Stephen McGlinchey, to update our email list. This involves using your knowledge, enthusiasm and some good old-fashioned research to identify academics at universities around the world and collect data on them. You can be from anywhere, of any age, studying on any continent – as long as you can speak/write English and have a passion for it. The reason we undertake this important task (approximately every 5 years) is to ensure that our website is promoted to each new generation of scholars, helping them understand the value of our free offerings to themselves and their students. It has a real impact on students like you who may not understand electronic international relations.
This work will be done remotely (using Slack and Google Sheets/Docs) as part of a small team, and comprehensive coaching and guidance will be provided. If you apply, you should have 5 to 10 hours available during the second half of July, throughout August, and most of early September. The program is expected to conclude around the first week of September, at which time all those completing the assignment will be offered additional positions in Electronic International Relations to suit their interests, if necessary.
Volunteering at an electronics international relations firm is not your typical “work experience.” First, we use Slack to coordinate our activities remotely. So you don’t need to be physically present at a job site to volunteer with us. Second, we have no paid staff, we are all volunteers. We volunteer some of our spare time because we want to help maintain the best online resource for students and scholars of international politics, and help expand our readership, which reaches approximately 2.5 to 3 million readers and 8 million article views annually. Finally, we help our editors learn skills, manage their time, and grow their projects. The result is that the more volunteers give, the more they gain from the experience. Not surprisingly, many of our editors have used their experience with us to go on to senior positions in publishing, politics and academia.
► To apply, please send an email with the subject “Editorial Assistant” to recruitment.e.ir@gmail.com
In the body of the email, please:
- Tell us (briefly) why you think you are a good fit for this role, and in doing so confirm that you have the time to complete the task in late July, throughout August, and the first week of September 2024 (maximum 150 words). It’s okay if you’re not available every week, as long as you’re available most of the time during the 7 weeks of the project.
- Tell us (again briefly) where you studied/have studied, to what level and what you plan to study/do next (maximum 150 words). Do not include a resume.
- If you have any questions, ask them (again, be brief and to the point).
The site will close on 16 July 2024 at 12:00 noon (GMT/UTC). Unfortunately, due to the high number of inquiries we receive, we are unable to respond to candidates who are not shortlisted. Applicants whose applications have been unsuccessful in the past are encouraged to apply again.
