Those who might be looking to get out of the Google ecosystem got some good news from Proton on Wednesday.
Specifically, the privacy-focused software company’s Proton Drive product suite is getting a new product in the form of a shared text editor called Proton Docs. Proton Drive’s text editor looks like Very Similar to Google Docs, multiple people can edit files together on the fly using powerful editing tools. However, according to Proton, this editor encrypts everything end-to-end, including cursor movements.

According to reports, Apple will announce a partnership with Google at the iPhone 16 launch event
Proton claims this is the first “major document editor” to enable end-to-end encryption by default. The announcement blog post also warns you in bold text that data stored in content such as Google Drive “may even be used to train artificial intelligence in the future.” While Google doesn’t currently use your files to train its AI models (according to The Verge), Proton seems to be positioning itself as a company that will no way do this instead of doing this possible one day.
Regardless, Proton Docs is free as long as you sign up for a Proton Drive account.
