A driver crashed into a Manhattan park during Fourth of July celebrations Thursday night, killing at least two people and injuring seven others, authorities said.
According to the New York City Police Department, the incident occurred around 9 p.m. on the Lower East Side.
New York City Police Commissioner Jeffrey Maddrey said at a press conference on Thursday that the driver of a Ford F-150 pickup truck was traveling at a high rate of speed and ran a stop sign at the intersection.
The suspect’s gray pickup truck then drove onto the sidewalk and struck people attending Independence Day celebrations, according to Madre.

First responders found the truck on top of the four victims, police said.
Authorities said nine people were hit and at least two died.

Madre said they are still working to determine the ages of the victims, but they believe at least two children were taken to the hospital.
Police say officers who responded to the scene smelled the odor of alcohol at the scene, but testing is still ongoing.
Police said they did not believe it was a terrorism-related incident.
