Apple is preparing to launch iOS 18 In the fall, the update should bring new features to your iPhone, such as customizable home and lock screens. However, when Apple released iOS 17 In 2023, the tech giant launched a new feature called Screen Distance to help you take care of your eyes.
The feature warns you when you hold your iPhone or iPad too close to your face, just like a parent telling you to sit further away from the TV or computer screen. According to the health care organization Cedars-Sinai, while having a screen close to your face may not harm your eyes, it may cause stress and irritation to your eyes. Thankfully, this new feature in iOS 17 is designed to help you reduce eye strain, and according to Apple, it may even reduce the risk of myopia, or nearsightedness.
Here’s how to turn on screen distance and give your eyes a break.

Turn on screen distance
1. Open settings.
2. tap Detection time.
3. tap screen distance.
These screens will appear the first time you visit Screen Distance.
You will then see two screens explaining what Screen Distance is and how it works. tap continue On both screens, screen distance automatically turns on after those screens. These two screens only appear the first time you enter Screen Distance.
Now, after a few minutes of holding your iPhone too close to your face, your screen will be obscured by a message that says “iPhone may be too close.”
Screen Distance blocks your screen when you hold your iPhone too close to your face for too long.
Your screen remains obscured until you hold your iPhone further. Your screen will then display a check mark and you must click continue Delete block.

Turn off screen distance
Screen Distance is a useful iOS feature that can reduce eye strain and even reduce the risk of myopia. However, if you find these warnings more annoying than helpful, here’s how to turn off Screen Distance.
1. Open settings.
2. tap Detection time.
3. tap screen distance.
4. Click the switch next to screen distance.
Now you can continue to hold your iPhone close to your face without interference from your phone or parents.
