Senators Ron Wyden and Sheldon Whitehouse asked Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Clarence Thomas. Judge Clarence Thomas for criminal violations of ethics and tax laws.
Senators wrote to the Attorney General:
We are writing to request that you appoint a special prosecutor to investigate possible violations of federal ethics and tax laws by Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas. Over the past year, public reports and a Senate investigation found that Judge Thomas repeatedly and intentionally omitted gifts and income from financial disclosure reports required by the Government Ethics Act. The Senate is investigating the omissions and considering improvements to ethics and tax laws.
…
We do not make this request lightly. The evidence gathered so far clearly demonstrates that Judge Thomas repeatedly and knowingly violated federal ethics and misrepresentation laws and raises significant questions about whether he and his wealthy donors complied with their federal tax obligations. Judge Thomas was given the opportunity to address questions about his conduct, but he remained suspiciously silent.
If Attorney General Garland steps back, sees a corrupt Supreme Court majority unwilling to police itself, looks at the evidence surrounding Justice Thomas, concludes that an independent investigation is needed, and appoints a special prosecutor, then Very good.
The reality is that the 1/6 committee must provide evidence to the Justice Department before it can expedite its investigation into the Capitol attack, so the senators’ request will likely be denied as too political and too close to the presidential election.
If a criminal investigation were launched against Judge Thomas, it would be a big step toward removing him from office. Getting rid of Thomas has nothing to do with politics. The evidence shows he is a corrupt judge who does not belong on the Supreme Court.
Senators Wyden and Whitehouse are using all means to get Justice Thomas’ attention.
