The FBI has identified the man who attempted to assassinate former U.S. President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The FBI announced early Sunday that it had “preliminarily identified” the person who attempted to assassinate former U.S. President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“At this time, we are not ready to identify who the shooter is. Uh, we are close to confirming the identity and once we are 100% confident in the identity of this individual, we will share it with the media. That being said, we have no identification at this time. Motive. While our investigators are working tirelessly to try to uncover a motive at this time,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek in Pittsburgh.
Hours after the press conference, the FBI released the suspect’s identity. He was identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

The New York Post first reported the suspect’s name.
The gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump on Saturday has been identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, sources told The Washington Post.
Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pa., squeezed out several shots at an outdoor rally in Butler, a suburb of Pittsburgh, including one that grazed Trump’s ear.
Sources say Crooks was planted on the roof of a manufacturing facility more than 130 yards from the stage at the Butler Farm performance venue.
He was killed by a Secret Service sniper. An AR-type rifle was later found.
Bethel Park is a village 40 miles south of where the Butler rally was held.
