I’m back from a few days off feeling rested, sunburnt and ready to go. Thanks to everyone who sent birthday wishes! I read this week born to love and stories about artificial intelligence gamer and artificial intelligence musician and ferrari electric carwatch inflection pointreplacing my weather app with lazy weather, Get mad at Isla Glass Listen to podcasts at 2x speedand pour all my feelings into point I have robots.
I also have a new phone for you, a new smart ring, a new/old podcast reunion, a sci-fi show that everyone seems to love, an update to a great recipe app, and a new app for Check out the new AI pod. There’s a lot going on in mid-July! Let’s dig a little deeper.

fall
- CMF phone 1. $200 for a good-looking, durable Android phone? Comes with an OLED screen, interchangeable back panels, and a bunch of really cool accessories, one of which is a stand? Yes. please. Of course it’s orange.
- Samsung Galaxy Ring. I’m still a fan of Samsung’s Fold and Flip phones, even though the new models are very similar and even more expensive. But what excites me the most is the Galaxy Ring, which seems to have solved the smart ring hardware problem perfectly and even has some interesting ideas about gesture control.
- “Diggness Reunion Part 1”. If you’re a tech enthusiast of a certain age, chances are you grew up watching Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht sit on the couch drinking wine and making tech jokes. It’s been a blast watching these guys get back together. and There is a second partalso!
- Delta 1.6. Delta’s gaming simulation is now available on iPad! In fact, considering how much of my retro gaming is done on an iPhone with a Backbone controller, I’m actually not sure how much I’d use it. But this update, with a bigger screen and support for multiple games at the same time, sounds really great.
- Amazon launches new Echo Spot. To me, this is the perfect balance for an Alexa speaker. It’s small, costs $45 (currently), has a touch screen but no camera, and is sized to fit on a nightstand. I’ve always promised not to leave my phone in the bedroom, maybe this will replace it.
- sunny. A woman loses her husband but gets a robot from his tech company to help her through it. Strange things ensue. Such a good premise! By all accounts, the show continues Apple TV Plus’ long line of exciting sci-fi content. I’ll be sure to catch up before episode three airs on Wednesday.
- open atmosphere. Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads and Nostr, all in one timeline in one app. It’s basically a clever hack, not the interconnected social world of my dreams, but it’s a pretty good hack! I like that it basically hides the networks people are using; it’s just the people on the timeline.
- pestle. I love a good recipe app. I mainly use Crouton and Mela, but Pestle’s new ability to import recipes from Instagram Reels is great. Just put in the link, give it a name, and it turns the video into a bunch of ingredients and steps.
Screen sharing
A million years ago, I was an intern wired, One story I helped put together was this crazy thing: a writer decided to disappear completely to see if the Internet could find him. This is a great story, written by Evan Ratliff, who has become one of my favorite journalists ever since. He co-founded atavist Magazine A lot of great work was done there, creating great persona Podcasts, until recently, were long list, I always dreamed that one day I would be invited to be on a news podcast. well.
Now Evan has launched a new podcast called Guess the shell game, In it, he uses an artificial intelligence clone of his own voice to cause all kinds of chaos in his life. The first episode is Astonishing, I’m very excited for what’s next. I asked Evan to share his home screen with us, see if he had any podcasting tips I could steal from him, and see how artificial intelligence has become in his life.
Here’s Evan’s home screen, along with some information about the apps he uses and why:
Telephone: iPhone 13 mini.
wallpaper: I’m sending here my cat Henry, an 18-year-old idol, a former minor Vine celebrity, and the cutest creature on earth. (Usually my kids, but I don’t allow their photos to appear on the open web.)
app: Google Maps, Photos, Apple Notes, Slack, Settings, Clock, Phone, WhatsApp, Signal, Freedom, Google Translate, CloudBeats, Scrivener, Instapaper, Spotify, TuneIn, Libby, Gmail, Google Calendar, Messages, Brave.
My home screen rule is no social media, no news. I’m an admitted news junkie, but I at least like to keep it out of sight. And there was never a Twitter app on the phone. For some applications:
- children [group]: One thing they don’t tell you about parenting in the 2020s is how many school, camp, and bus apps you’re forced to buy and check out.
- Ships/Planes: The only AR app I’ve ever used. I feel like a wizard just pointing the finger Flight Radar 24 in the sky or maritime traffic See where ships and planes are coming from and where they are going at sea. My father studied logistics and instilled in me a curiosity about how things get from one place to another.
- cloud beat: Essential for listening to podcast drafts while running and walking; and Guess the shell game During the production process, I sometimes spent several hours a day working on this.
- Libby: Any New Yorker who doesn’t have it is missing out. You can get e-books and audiobooks from the library and listen here!
- printing paper: Is anyone still using Instapaper? I don’t even know who owns this thing anymore. But this is still how I read long-form articles that I save.
I also asked Evan to share something that interests him right now. Here’s what he shared:
- moss. Made a moss garden this year and I am interested in all things moss related. Websites on how to maintain it and its incredible properties, moss experts e.g. Mosin Anne). moss!
- new charlie crockett album. Just a talented songwriter and singer with an incredible story. Perfect for listening while walking on moss (you have to do it).
- Currently rewatching braindead amplifiera collection of essays by George Saunders, parts of which feel very Guess the shell game-relevant to me.
- My sister-in-law is 50 times more culturally aware than me and she made us watch this British comic game show, overseer. The perfect stress reliever after a long day at work with your artificial intelligence doppelganger.

“I just wanted to share an app that no one knows about (which was a shock to me). It’s called Sleek inbox. The idea is very simple: it allows you to create your own inbox just for newsletters. I hate reading newsletters in my personal Gmail box, and this is a very convenient solution to my problem. ——Dennis
“I just finished watching all six episodes of Netflix in one sitting supasel. It’s just like hero But even dirtier, set in South London, with an almost all-black cast, and produced by Rapman. It’s one of the best things I’ve seen this year, and a fresh take on a genre that is basically monopolized by Marvel. – Guilherme
“Currently reading The singularity is closer Author: Ray Kurzweil. We are lucky to be able to see human evolution in real time. – Matthew
“Best Ball Draft” loser fantasy. What was once a niche version of fantasy football is now a (ridiculously?) popular form of sports betting, where players draft entire teams in an hour or less and then compete against strangers. It’s kind of like trying to win March Madness, but you draft a fantasy football roster. ——Noah
“use VR motion tracker App created by VR Health Institute. They use science-based VR activity measurement to help you measure your VR workouts. Connect with Apple Watch and other Bluetooth fitness devices. – Dan
“As a new father, Dungeon and Dad Resonates with me in a special way. This (self-proclaimed non-BDSM) podcast R&DIt tells the story of four fathers who explore and rescue their missing sons in a fantasy land. It made me laugh harder than I had in a long time and made me cry more than once. I have listened to the first season three times (over 180 hours) and am now re-listening to the second season. – mark
“Just bought one Bucs go 10.3 E-ink tablet, I really like it. Very slim, nice design, no front light, you can write on it if you want. It’s more of a competitor to the Remarkable 2 (i.e. note-taking device), but I enjoy using it to read articles through the Omnivore. ——Patrick
“I recently started reading a book called deep work Cal Newport explains the advantages of taking time to focus on a task and minimize distractions. My attention span, and that of many others, has been obliterated in recent years, so I picked up this book to try and correct my ability to focus deeply. ——Dave
“Apple PenLite: iPad before iPad”. I’ve been watching Colin Holter’s channel for a few years and really like his stuff, but this video is really different for him. He interviewed several former Apple employees, which I thought was done very well. I was pretty young at the time, so I don’t remember any news about this stuff, but it was very interesting to get that perspective from engineers and product managers who were working at Apple at the time. – Ian

I sincerely believe”Every frame is a painting” is the best series ever produced on YouTube. If you haven’t seen it yet, please watch them all. (If you only watch one, watch it This is about Edgar Wright. or It’s about David Fincher. or this Marvel movie sounds. Just look at them! a short trailer For a new limited series and short film – I immediately started refreshing the page every 10 minutes and re-watching every content on the channel. It’s like going to film school at breakneck speed and I highly recommend it. Chair, you! Chair!
