At least six people of Vietnamese origin were found dead in a luxury hotel suite in the Thai capital Bangkok, police said.
Some of the dead were Vietnamese-American, according to the government.
Local media initially suggested a shooting at Bangkok’s five-star Grand Hyatt Lovers Bay hotel, but police dismissed those reports and said there was no evidence of gunfire.
Local media are currently reporting that the police believe the victim may have been poisoned, but the news has not been confirmed and the cause of death remains unknown.
Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin visited the scene and ordered an investigation into the deaths, saying he did not want the case to damage the country’s image or have an impact on tourism.
He said that the police suspected that the deceased had been dead for 24 hours and would conduct an autopsy to determine whether it was something they had eaten.
He added that police suspected there might be a seventh Vietnamese but had not yet found that man.
Earlier, Thailand’s public broadcaster quoted police as saying three women and three men died.
Police Maj. Gen. Thiradech Thamsuthee told the broadcaster that preliminary investigations showed the victim died from poisoning.
PBS reported that “there were no signs of struggle. Tea and coffee cups were found being used.”
At around 17:30 local time, the police rushed to the hotel after receiving a call from hotel staff.
