Who will you become in the face of change?
What do you do when your life and career change?
The truth is, many of the real estate entrepreneurs we work with set goals in order to transform their business and achieve their desired results. Sometimes these changes are external to you and the goals you outlined in your annual business plan.
Voluntary, self-determined goals may be related to team building, creating new expectations and processes, or developing plans to increase average price point or overall sales.
Currently, we are faced with significant external and involuntary changes, such as market changes, rising interest rates, and of course the implementation of operational changes as part of the upcoming Commission litigation settlement agreement on August 17th.
Either type of change forces us to change the way we do business and communicate with potential customers. One thing is certain and clear – change is inevitable.
Change is not only inevitable, it also provides us with endless opportunities to do better, to do better, and to perform better as a business. However, many people are unwilling to deal with the changes needed to achieve their goals, such as expanding their skills and training or creating new boundaries or procedures.
It’s unrealistic to think that you can create macro changes in your career or your life without making many micro changes along the way. Those moments of big change that many people seek are built on a series of smaller changes.
In the words of mystery novelist Rita Mae Brown, we cannot do the same thing over and over again and expect different results. Different outcomes require different ways of thinking, different actions, and different strategies. In short, it needs to change.
Many times, change can feel uncomfortable, sometimes stressful, and many times scary. Change can feel overwhelming and even a little daunting. As a result, many of us resist change and cling to what is familiar—even if we no longer fit into our current circumstances and relationships (or they no longer serve us). We may resist change, even if it relates to a larger goal or intention.
In real estate, as in life, growth and change are not only inevitable, but unavoidable. They are critical to success. Ask the most sustainably successful agents in the industry and you’ll find that they are constantly evolving, adapting and improving in their business and personal lives.
In fact, they welcome change because they know it is the path to new fulfillment, prosperity, and purpose. Research Supports the fact that adaptability and flexibility to change are key characteristics of successful (and happy) humans.
Growth and evolution are core elements of success, requiring us to step outside our comfort zones, face our fears, and embrace the possibilities that change brings. Rather than viewing change with fear or resistance, develop a new relationship with change in which it is recognized as the gateway to reaching your full potential in life and business to achieve these ambitious goals.
By reframing your relationships and approach, you can more easily see change as a positive force in your life, opening yourself up to new opportunities, experiences, and growth. Instead of fearing and resisting change, you can consciously and actively choose to embrace it as a catalyst for transformation, progress, and achieving (and even exceeding) your goals.
How can you make yourself more welcoming to growth and change?

Review your systems, procedures, processes
Systems, procedures and processes are the backbone of a successful real estate business. They provide the necessary structure to achieve smooth, sustainable, consistent and efficient operations. While most people agree that this is true, many people often resist creating reliable and effective systems in the first place. Many more people resist changing these systems and stick with outdated methods that may no longer work for them.
Specifically, consider the impact of new commission settlement requirements and the need to adapt to these changes. Embrace new working methods, enhance communication strategies with clients, and invest in relevant training to stay at the forefront of the industry.
ask yourself
- What systems, procedures and processes are currently working well in my business?
- Which ones are outdated or ineffective and need to be updated or replaced?
- Am I resisting changes to my systems and procedures because of fear of the unknown?
- Am I willing to complete the necessary training and education to develop and grow?
- How do I implement new ways of working, communicating with clients, and integrating ongoing training and education to improve my business operations?
Evaluate your habits and routines
Our habits and behaviors gradually shape our daily lives and ultimately determine our long-term success. Identifying and cultivating positive habits that align with our goals and values is critical to personal and professional growth in real estate and in life. Often, our habits and behaviors are taken for granted and we overlook all the little details that add up to big results, either positive or negative.
ask yourself

- What new habits do I need to develop to support my personal and career growth?
- Do my habits and behaviors align with and reflect a resilient growth mindset?
In order to make positive changes in the way we think about and engage with the world, our mindset, the partners we keep, and how we move through the world on a daily basis, we need to tap into our consciousness and identify areas that need change. Doing this requires honest self-reflection and a willingness to step outside of our comfort zones.
Whether it’s shifting our mindset, surrounding ourselves with supportive people, creating a supportive environment for growth, or developing new habits, every change we make reflects our willingness to create change, embrace change, and not Fear of change.
This new relationship with the changes our purpose requires brings us closer to the vision of success we seek to create and experience.
