Vice President Kamala Harris expected to make first official campaign appearance today in Milwaukee as a possible Democratic candidate. Harris is not yet a nominee. However, as of late last night, she had enough support from delegates to become the nominee. Harris yesterday outlined a broad agenda at her campaign headquarters in Delaware that includes fighting for reproductive rights and lifting the middle class.
- 🎧 NPR’s Asma Khalid talks about a visit to Harris campaign headquarters first up The atmosphere was like a party. BeyoncĂ© was playing and people were chanting Harris’ name. Khalid reports that Harris’ campaign said it raised a record amount of money — more than $100 million — in about 24 hours after Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed the vice president. She added that when she was at the Republican National Committee last week, Republicans also showed great enthusiasm for Trump and his chances of winning. During the election, Harris sought to choose between two different visions of America—one focused on the future, the other on the past.
- ➡️ This is someone who needs attention She would be Harris’ potential running mate if she wins the nomination.
Republicans warn of legal challenges to smooth transition from Biden to Harris As a presidential candidate, even top Democrats supported her. Before Biden dropped out of the race, some questioned whether Democrats could replace their presidential nominee. Now, Republicans are more concerned about Harris’ access to Biden’s campaign funds. The campaign said earlier this month it had raised $240 million.
- 🎧 Some Republicans think Harris can’t use Biden campaign funds Because he’s no longer a candidate, says NPR’s Sarah McCammon. Others say that since Biden and Harris share a campaign committee, there should be no problem. The Federal Election Commission said the situation is complex and legal challenges are possible. But the committee has been notoriously slow to move. That means Harris could spend the money and pay fines later if something goes wrong, McCammon said. The situation becomes more complicated if a nominee other than Harris wants to use the money.
Yesterday, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle was questioned by House of Representatives members who demanded answers. About the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. She spent nearly five hours in limbo. She said in her testimony that the agency is cooperating with multiple ongoing investigations and conducting its own review of what went wrong. Lawmakers left without answering their biggest question: How would a gunman be allowed to have a clear line of sight with Trump on a rooftop?
- 🎧 “Cheatle calls July 13 assassination attempt the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades,” NPR’s Ryan Lucas reports. She confirmed that the agency flagged the shooter as a suspect before Trump took office, but they did not know he had a gun. If they had known, Trump would not have been allowed to take office. She added that it’s not uncommon for someone to be flagged as suspicious at an event, distinguishing that from being identified as a threat. Chettle has faced growing pressure to resign, but she said she believes she remains the best person for the job.
