Incredibly, Democratic small-dollar donors erased Donald Trump’s cash advantage in a single day.
Peter Hamby reports in Parker:
Harris’ fundraising numbers are absolutely astounding. In just 24 hours, the campaign raised $81 million. It was the largest single-day fundraising total in U.S. history, and the amount erased the cash advantage Trump had built up in recent weeks. Democratic donors, big and small, have been declining to donate since the Atlanta debates, and the next round of votes in the Senate and House have been met with party-wide anguish and confusion, I can reliably tell. Harris’ flood of money has eliminated that problem, just in time for the newly minted Harris campaign to show off what is sure to be a wild July fundraising total next month. I’ve never seen anything like this.
The Harris campaign released an update Tuesday afternoon saying they have raised more than $100 million:
Harris’ team raised more than $100 million between Sunday afternoon and Monday night and now has more than 1.1 million unique donors since Sunday, 62% of whom were first-time donors. The amount reflects money raised by the entire campaign, the Democratic National Committee and the joint fundraising committee.
On top of that, Harris’ team raised $81 million in the first 24 hours, adding to the nearly $2.5 billion in existing funding already accumulated this election cycle. With this historic victory, Harris’ campaign for president recorded the highest 24-hour fundraising of any candidate in history, with more than 888,000 grassroots donors contributing.
None of this is normal. Political parties don’t change presumptive presidential nominees 100 days or so before Election Day, nor do party bases rally around new candidates and flood them with money and support within 24 hours.
Elections will become more difficult. Trump and the Republican Party will respond with sexist and racist attacks on Vice President Harris. It won’t be easy because Donald Trump has a solid support base and a conservative media operation that will echo and try to legitimize every vile attack.
For nine years, Trump has shown he’s not leaving. He must be defeated.
Democrats were emboldened, energized, and back in this election to show up and wipe out all of Trump’s wealthy donor money through a wave of small-dollar donations from ordinary people.
