It was just a dream: “President [Joe] Biden to be appointed Vice President [Kamala] Senior administration officials announced Wednesday that Harris would be tasked with addressing the surge in migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. Axios Reported in March 2021.
Now that Harris is running for president — amid chaos at the border, record-high migrant encounters late last year and Biden imposing tough asylum restrictions last month to try to curb immigration — much of the reporting is based on memory gaps. It’s embarrassing for Harris, we can’t have that now, can we?
“Harris’ border chaos plagues her new campaign,” new report reads Axios Yesterday’s headlines, published by the same reporter who wrote the March 2021 article. In fact, she said, “in early 2021, President Biden invited Vice President Kamala Harris to help address some of the immigration issues,” including “leading[ing] The administration is coordinating with Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, which are major sources of migrants at the border.
But now, “over the past few days, the Trump campaign and Republicans have repeatedly labeled Harris the ‘border czar’ — a title she never actually held,” the report said axis. At the end of this article there is an asterisk mentioning Axios was one of the publications that incorrectly used the nickname “Border Czar”. Fact-checkers were quick to endorse the new party line. New York Times He also corrected himself by attributing his title of “border czar” to Republicans. mother jones Calling Harris the government’s border czar is a “myth.” I mean, expert even Say she is notso how could anyone disagree?
This is all technically correct: border czar Not a formal title. This is what we call in American politics and the media…the people in the presidential administration who are responsible for immigration and border affairs. This is, in part, what Harris was told to do.
Interestingly, it seems like a no-brainer that Harris is tasked with addressing the root causes of the border crisis, something the White House dreamed of doing to distance Harris from the chaos at the border, but in reality, she has clearly failed to do so. This point makes no progress on the root cause issue. Whatever her role is — or how her role is conveniently portrayed — she doesn’t seem very good at it (several swing-state voters interviewed by MSNBC have taken advantage of this).
If she does succeed in this, publications will surely use the title “Border Czar” to honor her abilities.
As for the media aspect of this scandal, I traditionally believe that when politicians have a distasteful record, it’s perfectly fine for reporters to cover them. One might even say it’s part of the job.
Don’t ask me to send you to a government health farm! Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is running for president with about 9 percent of the vote, has unveiled his plan to overhaul drug addiction treatment in the country. He will create “health farms” for patients to help them wean themselves off opioids, SSRIs, Adderall, benzodiazepines, whatever drugs they are addicted to, whether legal or illegal, and once there, they Will “regain parental care” (?) in three to four years.
“They’re going to grow their own food – organic food, quality food, because a lot of behavioral problems are food-related, a lot of diseases are food-related,” he said. “There won’t be any cell phones, there won’t be any screens.”
Kennedy was an Angeleno at heart. He won’t win over many Deep South voters with his organic and healthy farm speech. It sounds like something Gwyneth Paltrow might come up with after spending too much time in the sun and injecting too much turmeric, rather than an actual policy proposal. But it also illustrates the point on a deeper level: Like many of Kennedy’s proposals, the existence of such a thing sounds absolutely lovely. He is right that people can detox from drugs and cell phones and build a sense of meaning through work. But any expectation that the government could successfully implement such a scheme betrays upper class naivety about how government services actually work.
How to fund these government health farms? Kennedy said taxing marijuana. (Marijuana is federally regulated, you might ask? Marijuana is already heavily taxed, which in some states is causing marijuana users to turn back to the black market.) How are people selected for government health farms? “What I’m trying to do is make it so people can go, if you’re convicted of a drug crime, or you have a drug problem, you can go to one of these places for free,” he said. OK Therefore, drug addicts and those recently arrested for drug problems will make up the majority of the government health farm population, a sure recipe for success.
“We’re going to re-raise people and restore connections to our communities,” Kennedy added. But government is not your parents, nor is it the 20-year-old Healthy Farm employee tearing up a water gun behind a turnip patch. Building a truly helpful, lasting community is not something you can do through taxes and bureaucracy, nor is it something you can do through will. Kennedy’s originality and fascinating (perhaps even semi-correct!) diagnosis of our ailments never fails to disappoint us. But like much of his advice, he seemed confused. This is not and cannot be the domain of government.
Goodbye, Joe! Last night, Biden gave a speech in which he failed to tell the full reason for his speech: that he was withdrawing from the presidential race due to cognitive decline; in fact, he did it in the most questionable and labor-saving way possible – through A letter posted on Facebook — leading to questions about whether he was hiding his true condition; indeed, supporters and opponents alike want to reflect on how we got here.
Instead, Biden has focused on “saving democracy,” by which he appears to actually mean standing up to former President Donald Trump. Never mind the undemocratic situation he has imposed on his party: Voters who had planned to vote for him at the convention to convey the will of the people of their state will no longer be able to do so, and an open convention would not allow Biden to adopt a strong nomination process to judge the best alternative candidate to the president, but instead endorsed his vice president, who had previously run a failed presidential bid. At one point, he claimed it was time to “pass the torch to a new generation” — an idea he hadn’t embraced until last weekend.
Elsewhere in the speech, he made clear that he was not only seeking to serve out his term, but was also trying to push for “Supreme Court reform” in the form of term limits and a binding and enforceable ethics code. So this elderly Democrat with cognitive decline, who hid his illness from the people for months and even years, put his party in dire straits, and failed to admit what he had done, will try to exploit the last To suppress a controversial event in one fell swoop. What problems might arise?
