Most people have experienced that uncomfortable moment when they realize a bug is somewhere they shouldn’t be – in their trachea.
This includes Taylor Swift, who on more than one occasion accidentally swallowed a bug while performing on stage in front of thousands of people.
It may have been a shocking and somewhat disgusting incident – but was it dangerous, or just a nuisance?

California quadruple board certified physician Dr. Raj Dasgupta shares with Fox News Digital the true impact of accidents swallow a bugand the best course of action if this happens.
“It’s common to accidentally swallow bugs when you eat or drink outside, or when bugs fly into your mouth,” Dasgupta, chief medical advisor for Wealth Recommendations, said via email told Fox News Digital.
“This can also happen if you are talking or laughing outdoors. Sometimes this can even happen indoors if there are bugs in your food or drink and you don’t realize it.”
Ask your doctor: “How can I prevent scarring from bug bites and poison ivy?”
Dasgupta points out that swallowing bugs is generally not dangerous.
“The stomach’s digestive acids normally break down this bacteria and eliminate it from the body without causing harm,” he says.
However, doctors say if the bacterium carries harmful bacteria or parasites, it can cause gastrointestinal problems or allergic reactions.
The wrong type can make a difference, he said.

“Bugs like beetles or ants are less of a concern, but bugs known to spread disease – such as mosquitoes – may be a greater risk.”
If you happen to swallow a bug, drinking some water can help flush it down, Dasgupta said.
“If you start to feel sick, such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or nausea, pay attention to your symptoms,” doctors say.
Dasgupta says you should see a doctor if you have severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, difficulty breathing, swelling, rash or itching.

He added: “If you know the bacteria could cause illness or you have a health condition that could complicate matters, it’s best to get tested just to be safe.”
