The grand jury returned a three-count indictment charging Hadi Matar, 26, of Fairview, New Jersey, with engaging in transnational transgressions by attempting to provide material support to Hezbollah, a designated foreign terrorist organization. acts of terrorism and provide material support to Hezbollah.

According to court documents and the government’s presentation in court, between September 2020 and August 2022, Matar attempted to provide material support and resources to Hezbollah, which is designated as a foreign terrorist organization. Matar attempted to do this by enforcing a fatwa calling for the execution of Salman Rushdie, a decision Matar knew was supported by Hezbollah.
The indictment further alleges that Matar attempted to kill and actually assaulted Rushdie. Matar was motivated in part by a 2006 speech by Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, in which Nasrallah endorsed a manhunt originally issued in 1989 calling for Rushdie’s death make…….
