NextNav thanks the FCC for soliciting public input on innovative spectrum solutions in the 900 MHz band
Reston, Va., Aug. 06, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — NextNav (NASDAQ: neural network (Nasdaq: ), a leader in next-generation positioning, navigation, timing (PNT) and 3D geolocation, today announced that the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued an announcement soliciting innovative spectrum solutions in its 900 MHz band Comments (band 902-928 MHz).
On April 16, NextNav submitted a rulemaking petition requesting the FCC to initiate this process to reconfigure the 900 MHz frequency band and adopt new rules to enable terrestrial 3D PNT networks to complement and support the Global Positioning System (GPS). The rearrangement of frequency bands will also free up 15 MHz of valuable low-band spectrum for 5G broadband while appropriately protecting existing operations.
NextNav CEO Mariam Sorond said, “We appreciate the FCC’s public notification, which is an important next step in providing innovative spectrum solutions in the 900 MHz band.” Supplementing and backing up GPS is critical to protecting the things we need every day – from location mapping and tracking services, to serving as an essential tool for locating emergency callers, to meeting critical infrastructure and national security needs. In addition, our plan creates abundant resources from the scarcity of this spectrum band by freeing up much-needed spectrum for wireless technology. These common-sense solutions can benefit consumers and our national interest at no cost to taxpayers.
The FCC has asked the public to comment on this process by September 5, 2024, and to respond by September 20, 2024.
NextNav is the primary geographic licensee in the lower 900 MHz band and is leveraging its existing licenses to develop industry-leading PNT expertise and products. However, much of this band is underutilized due to legacy band planning and regulations. Reconfiguring the frequency bands will pave the way for terrestrial PNT services as a complement and backup to GPS. It will also open up 15 MHz of low-band spectrum for 5G broadband.
