Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon’s return to the lineup on Tuesday was delayed not because of his health but because of inclement weather during a scheduled game against the host New York Yankees.
The Angels returned the oft-injured Rendon from the ten-day injured list before Tuesday’s game, which was rescheduled as part of a Wednesday doubleheader.
Rendon entered the IL on July 30 (retroactive to July 27) after missing two games against the Oakland Athletics with lower back inflammation.
The Angels placed 30-year-old outfielder Taylor Ward on the paternity test list on Tuesday and could miss up to three days.
Also on Tuesday, infielder Luis Lungifo underwent season-ending surgery on his right wrist. On Saturday, he underwent 10 days of IL treatment and further tests revealed he would need surgery. The team said it expects him to be ready for spring training in 2025.
The 34-year-old Rendon has played in only 33 games this season. He missed 2 1/2 months with a strained hamstring, returning in early July and playing 14 games before his last appearance on the IL, which was at least 10 days.
He has no home runs, six RBIs and a .227 batting average this year.
Since joining the Angels in December 2019 on a seven-year, $245 million deal, Rendon has never appeared in more than 58 games in a season. He played in 916 games with the Washington Nationals from 2013-19, hitting 136 home runs, driving in 546 RBIs, and batting .290. He has now played in 233 games with Los Angeles, hitting 22 home runs and hitting .290. 117 RBIs and a batting average of .245.
Rengifo, 27, missed Wednesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies and then Thursday’s game against the Rockies with a sudden wrist discomfort. He returned to the lineup Friday against the New York Mets but exited after four innings with wrist inflammation.
He was on the IL for nearly three weeks after first injuring his wrist on July 3.
Before his initial wrist injury, Rengifo was batting .315. He returned 20 days later and went 6-for-32 (.188) in nine games, a 15-point average drop. In 78 games this season, he hit .300 with six home runs and 30 RBIs.
In six seasons (526 games) with the Angels, Rengifo batted .253 with 53 home runs and 187 RBIs.
