Left-hander Nick Lodolo used six strong innings to seal the victory for the former first-round pick and the Cincinnati Reds beat the host Miami Marlins 8-2 on Tuesday night.
Tyler Stephenson and Ty France each hit a home run to lead Cincinnati’s offense.
Reds shortstop Eli De La Cruz went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs. In the first two of those four games, he went 8-for-10 with two homers and five RBIs.
Lodolo (9-4), the seventh overall pick in the 2019 draft, allowed two runs on two hits. He walked three and struck out seven.
Right-hander Max Meyer (2-2) allowed eight hits and six runs in four innings while walking three and striking out two. Meyer was selected with the third overall pick in the 2020 draft.
Cincinnati opened the scoring in the second inning when Stephenson ambushed Meyer on his first pitch and hit a slider 418 feet to center.
In the third inning, De La Cruz double-teamed on the right outside line, stole three points, and scored on TJ Friedel’s two-run homer. The Reds rewritten the score to 2-0.
Cincinnati extended its lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning.
De La Cruz got the game going with a two-run double, then Friedl added a sacrifice fly and Stephenson followed with an RBI single.
The Marlins loaded the bases in the bottom half of the fourth after Lodolo issued three walks to load the bases. With two outs, Derek Hill hit a two-run single to bring the Heat up 6-2, but when catcher Stephenson caught Hill Lodolo got out of trouble when Er tried to steal second base.
France’s home run to right-center in the fifth inning extended Cincinnati’s lead to 7-2.
In the eighth inning, the Reds took an 8-2 lead on Noelvi Marte’s double, advanced to third on De La Cruz’s single, and scored on Marlins shortstop Ze Scored on a throwing error by Xavier Edwards.
The Miami Heat loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but Otto Lopez ended the threat with a double.
