There are two unscheduled doubleheaders on Wednesday, giving teams with strong bullpens a huge advantage.
It’s also a pressure for teams still in the playoffs.
For example, the New York Yankees have one more game in Baltimore, but that only matters if they can sweep the Angels. If they go their separate ways, the Orioles’ victory in Toronto means they’ve given up a brief advantage.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Cleveland Guardians (Game 1)
Ben Lively has been great at home this season. He allowed more than two runs in one start all year in Cleveland, and he didn’t have an out until the sixth inning at Progressive Field all season. (Ironically, the only exception was when he allowed three runs to the White Sox, the worst offense in baseball).
In the Cleveland bullpen, the game is effectively over when the starters can give you at least five, and often six, innings. Cleveland leads the majors with a 2.65 bullpen ERA, and the Guardians’ 38 saves rank second only to St. Louis. Guardians are built for tag team play as they have a lot of weapons available to them. Instead, Arizona’s bullpen is one of its biggest weaknesses. If Lively pitches like he usually does, Arizona will likely retain its better bullpen arm for Game 2 and take a chance against Carlos Carrasco.

San Francisco Giants vs Washington Nationals
Blake Snell will have a lot of teams looking to trade him if the left-hander is on the books at the trade deadline.
Then again, the Giants are so close to him that he probably won’t be available for a digestible price.
San Francisco is 4.5 games away from the final playoff spot, and unlike many teams in this situation, the Giants won’t just make up the numbers. With a rotation that includes Snell, Logan Webber, and Robbie Ray, San Francisco will be terrifying for a top team in a short series.
Snell threw a no-hitter in his last game against Cincinnati and has been great over the month.
He has allowed zero runs in the ERA in four of his past five games. Jake Irvin isn’t pitching well right now; his ERA over his past five starts is an ugly 6.42. If Snell pitches anything close to what he’s been doing, the Giants should just roll with it.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. St. Louis Cardinals
Eric Feder is one of the only good things the White Sox have going for them. Now he’s in St. Louis, trying to get the Cardinals into the playoffs. His red debut didn’t go well, but it was also against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, where the wind was unpredictable.
In St. Louis, he should look more like himself.
It helps that he’s facing a familiar opponent in Tampa Bay, whom he already beat 4-2 through 8 1/3 innings on April 28. Taj Bradley also struggled in his most recent starts, but he allowed just one run in his four starts before that. He should bounce back here, leading to a pitching duel for Eastern Missouri.
