Jack Draper was knocked out of the Canadian Open in straight sets on Wednesday, but he came back later in the day to win his doubles match.
British No. 1 Draper lost to Taylor Fritz in the second round of the Paris Olympic clay-court tournament last week in his first hard-court singles match since the Miami Masters in March.
The 22-year-old was beaten 7-5, 6-2 in just over an hour and a half, giving Australia’s Jordan Thompson a deserved place in the last 32 against second seed Alexander Z Verev.
But just two hours later, Draper was back on the court, reaching the men’s doubles quarterfinals with Italy’s Janik Sinner.
Draper paid dearly for a string of unforced errors in the singles defeat, missing an opportunity to build momentum ahead of the U.S. Open, the year’s final Grand Slam tournament scheduled for August 26. Kick-off at Flushing Meadows. Sky Sports Live.
World No. 30 Thompson took the initiative in the seventh game with a break of serve and eventually held on to his third set point after the Briton briefly brought the match back on serve.
Draper battled to save two break points in the first service game of the second set and hit some eye-catching winners in the match.
But costly double faults in the third and seventh games helped the 30-year-old rival advance into the second round.
However, Draper and Sinner beat Alexander Bublik and Ben Shelton 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 to reach the men’s doubles quarter-finals, so there’s no match for the Brits in Montreal this week. Finish.
Elsewhere at the Canadian Open, Britain’s Harriet Dart lost to Diana 3-6 6-3 6-7 (2-7) in a thrilling match in Toronto ·Diana Shnaider.
Naomi Osaka is preparing to return to the U.S. Open for the first time since 2022, defeating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur 6-3 6-1.
