Even though Akshay Bhatia is having an impressive 2024 season on the PGA Tour, he’s not entirely satisfied with this week’s Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina.
With the Wyndham Tournament being the final game of the regular season, Bhatia has begun to turn his attention to the playoffs, which begin with next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship. The top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will qualify for the event, with Bhatia currently ranked eighth.
The field will then be narrowed to the top 50 players, who will compete in the BMW Championship from August 22-25. Then, for the top 30 players, there will be the Tour Championship, the final event of the season.
“This is my first full season here, and not having a chance to play in the playoffs last year and coming in a little late, it’s really cool to just take those little steps,” Bhatia said. Postseason, I’m excited to see these golf courses again.
“I watch the Tour Championship every year. I actually think when I was 11 or 12, I went to Atlanta and watched it with a couple of my friends. Hopefully, you know, I can check out that goal and try And move on at the end of the season.
It’s already been a memorable season for Bhatia, with the 22-year-old Northridge, Calif., native playing in all four majors for the first time in his career. Bhatia missed the cut at both the PGA Championship and the Open, but finished tied for 35th at the Masters and tied for 16th at the U.S. Open.
Bhatia also won one of his two career PGA Tour titles this year, winning the Valero Texas Open on April 7.
“This has been a very interesting year for me,” Bhatia said. “I mean, it’s crazy, it’s almost over. Yeah, it’s good. Obviously, it’s very difficult to win here, and me being the last guy at the Masters, it’s all such a fairy tale. .
“I’ve had a lot of cuts, a lot of promotions and top 15s, and a few chances to win. All in all, it’s been a pretty good first full season and I’m looking forward to the last three remaining ones. Playoff events.
Bhatia is already thinking beyond this season. He said he also wants to compete in the Presidents Cup, which will be held in Montreal from Sept. 24-29.
“The Presidents Cup is definitely a goal,” he said. “Obviously, playing for your country is really special. Watching the Olympics is very, very inspiring and I hope to try to get on that team. I just heard a lot of great stories coming out of the team room.”
