Mississippi attorney Daniel Sidney Dale is accused of posing as an inmate legal counsel in an attempt to bring cellphones, cigar wrappers and other contraband into a correctional facility.
Dyer was charged with two counts of conspiracy and three counts of bringing contraband into a correctional facility, according to Hinds County Sheriff Terry Jones.
“Attorney Dale, who was in a position of trust responsible for the constitutional rights of arrested suspects, jeopardized the safety and integrity of the Hinds County Detention Facility and the public,” Jones said. “This investigation is ongoing and may result in more Charges and/or Arrests.
According to reports, at least 360 Georgia prison guards have been arrested on suspicion of smuggling contraband in the past five years.
The sheriff said Dyer entered the jail pretending to be the inmates’ legal counsel and repeatedly smuggled contraband to them.
Dyer was found with contraband on Thursday and was taken into custody by authorities.
The Sheriff’s Department said there will be more investigation and more arrests may be made.
