The V-0 rating is the highest level of flame retardant performance in the industry. When the material catches fire vertically, the flame must extinguish itself within 10 seconds. LG Chem is the first company in the world to obtain V-0 flame retardant performance certification through PFAS-free PC/ABS materials.
LG Chem relies on its own special flame-retardant process to make its PC/ABS materials more flame-retardant without PFAS. It also adds PCR plastic to reduce carbon emissions. This PFAS-free material has a 46% lower carbon footprint than traditional PC/ABS because it contains over 50% recycled plastic.
PFAS are highly flame retardant and insoluble in water and oil, so they are commonly used in cookware, clothing and cosmetics. However, since it does not break down in nature and has a negative impact on the environment, the demand for PFAS-free materials is growing mainly in Europe and the United States
The transition to environmentally friendly materials, including PFAS-free, flame-retardant plastics, will become a global trend. Steven Kim, senior vice president of LG Chemical’s Engineering Materials Business Unit, said, “We will continue to work hard on research and development to create environmentally friendly flame-retardant materials, prioritizing customer well-being and the environment.”
PFAS-free flame retardant materials are expected to be used in a variety of electrical equipment, such as laptops and tablets, “devices that are often in close contact with the human body and generate heat,” as well as industrial equipment such as inverters and electric vehicle chargers. In addition to PC/ABS materials, LG Chem has also successfully obtained UL certification for a variety of PFAS-free flame retardant materials developed by it, such as PC and PBT.
