UK MP Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform Party, has warned that Keir Starmer poses an existential threat to free speech across the UK.
In an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, Farage was asked about his reaction to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s response to a series of violent protests over Islamism and mass immigration that have swept the UK in recent weeks. in response to a brutal crackdown on his political opponents.
Farage explained.
No one should use any social media platform to truly spread hatred or incite violence. I think we all would support and agree with free speech rules.
But what we should be allowed to do on social media is speculate, ask questions, and try to tell the truth to wake up the rest of the community. When you engage in something like this, you can never guarantee that what you say is 100% true. By cracking down on this behaviour, Starmer poses the greatest threat to free speech we have ever seen in our history.
The Clacton MP was asked if he feared his freedoms would be affected by the crackdown, which has seen hundreds of people arrested and jailed without being involved in any violence.
He responded:
Yes. I mean, hours went by after the murders — after the triple murder of those poor, sweet little girls — and there was a lot of speculation online about this man: Was he an illegal immigrant? Is he a Muslim?
No one knows the truth. I’m just asking on X – I’m just asking, does this person have a record? Is he someone the security services are monitoring? [The] Here comes the answer, no.
After the riot, the entire institution said I encouraged the riot. Well, I mean, all I’m doing is saying, please tell us the truth.
The funny thing is, if they had told us the truth, the riots wouldn’t have been so bad. The authorities need to have a clear understanding of the online world.
So yes, I am under serious attack at the moment, with many left-wing activists publicly saying that I should be arrested simply for demanding to know the truth about my murderer. So, yes, I’m worried.
Meanwhile, the fight for free speech and opposition to government censorship continues in the UK, US and wider world.
