A violent wildfire broke out in a suburb of Athens, Greece, on Monday, killing one person.
Fire department sources told the BBC that the body, believed to be that of a woman, was found in a shop in the town of Velicia, north of Athens.
Thousands of people have been evacuated as firefighters warned of threats to homes, businesses and schools, with the fires expected to continue into Tuesday.
Fire service spokesman Vassilios Vathrakogiannis said there were many “active hotspots” in the northeastern region of Attica, but there were some signs of improvement Tuesday night.
Greece just experienced its hottest June and July on record.
More than 700 firefighters, 199 fire trucks and 35 water bombing aircraft are involved in fighting the blaze, which first broke out on Sunday afternoon about 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of the Greek capital.
The plane was forced to land as night fell on Monday, but ground operations would continue throughout the night.
In unprecedented scenes, people in Athens donned face masks to protect themselves from the smoke blowing into the city.
