Sky Sports F1 Ted Kravitz analyzes the selection of Adrian Newey, speculating that Aston Martin is leading the race to sign outgoing Red Bull design chief.
Red Bull confirmed in May that Newey would no longer serve as chief technical officer and would remain with the team until early 2025, solely responsible for their supercars programme.
The 65-year-old has since been linked with moves to Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Aston Martin, with recent reports suggesting the latter has emerged as a favorite.
Talking about the latest episode of the show Sky Sports F1 PodcastTed explains why Aston Martin was an attractive option for Newey.
He said: “You look at the investment Aston Martin have made, look at their factory. He’s already got the backing of Dan Fallows, who he’s worked with at Red Bull and has achieved success.
“I think he would have talked to Dan Fallows and asked, ‘What is this place that I’m going to? What is it like?’
“I actually asked Dan Fallows in Hungary about it if he would be happy with Newey joining him. Fallows said, ‘What you have to understand is that Adrian is a ruthless person. , unstoppable Formula 1 driver, and I would certainly welcome working with Adrian again at Aston Martin if he didn’t join another team.
“We all talked to different people at Aston Martin about what you could offer someone like Newey. You could say, ‘Come in, be a figurehead, sprinkle your magic powder everywhere and let our Employees are on the right track.
“It’s a judgment call for Newey and he wants to be happy there. If we believe the rumors, the current leaders are Aston Martin but it could be any of these teams.”
In this episode, Ted also analyzes Oliver Oakes’ appointment as Alpine team principal, and Jonathan Whitley’s exit from Red Bull to become Sauber/Audi team principal.
Alonso shy on Newey Links
Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso was asked in June about the prospect of Newey joining the Silverstone team, but he dismissed the reports as “rumors”.
“I read rumors and news, but they came from the same sources and websites,” said Alonso, who earlier this year signed a new contract with Aston Martin until the end of 2026. forward [reports said] He worked for Ferrari, so rumors are just rumors.
Asked what he would say to Newey to convince him to join the team, Alonso added: “That’s between me and him.”
