Juan Soto hit three home runs and drove in four runs on Tuesday, and Nestor Cortes pitched seven scoreless innings to lift the visiting New York Yankees to 4-4. 1 beat the Chicago White Sox.
Soto hit his sixth multi-homer game of the season and first three-homer game of his career. He drove in two runs in the third inning and singled in the fifth and seventh inning to help New York lead a half-game lead over Baltimore atop the AL East.
Chicago rookie right-hander Jonathan Cannon surrendered Soto’s first two long balls, resulting in his fourth loss in his past six starts. Frazier Ellard hit his third home run.
Cannon (2-6) allowed three runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked three, hit one batter and struck out four.
The White Sox beat the Yankees 12-2 one night and, after setting season highs in runs scored and hits (18), struggled to get their offense going on Tuesday. Cortez (6-10) limited them to three hits in seven innings while striking out nine.
Mark Leiter Jr. drove in a double, then Luis Robert Jr. hit an RBI single in the eighth inning with two outs to push Chicago to the final. Tommy Kahnle struck out the bottom of the eighth but left after allowing a walk and a double to start the ninth.
Jake Cousins got his first career save with one out and a walk to load the bases, slapping Brooks Baldwin to end the game.
Cortez retired the first 11 batters, striking out six, before Andrew Benintendi’s two-out single in the fourth inning gave Chicago the game’s lead. First hit.
Baldwin doubled to lead off the sixth inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, but the White Sox couldn’t score. Robert struck out before Benintandi flew to center.
Cortez has beaten the White Sox twice this season, allowing one run in 14 innings.
Aaron Judge had two hits for the Yankees.
New York defeated Chicago for the fourth time in five attempts to clinch the season series title.
The White Sox have lost 21 of 23 games since the All-Star break.
